Nigel Shaw is a composer, musician and flute-maker, whose journey with music began over twenty years ago. The inspiration for most of his music stems from the spirit of the land, with it's cycles of power, mystery and gentle beauty.
In the creation of his music, Nigel uses many ancient instruments including handmade wooden and clay flutes, traditional whistles and recorders, smallpipes, Fujara (Slovakian overtone flute), drums and percussion. He combines these with sound recordings gathered from nature and contemporary musical instruments such as keyboards and synthesisers. Nigel's work presents a unique landscape of sound and soul-filled melodies, a powerful fusion of the ancient and the new.
For many years he has been handcrafting his own flutes using woods indigenous to this land, such as Yew, Holly and Oak. He has created carvings of large wooden masks inspired by the moor. His most recent work has been the building of a large ceremonial Bronze-age style roundhouse, constructed of granite, Oak and rye-straw thatch.
He has produced a reknown and diverse collection of recordings from the classic album, THE RIVER, improvised and free flowing; to REQUIEM - Well of Souls, strong in theme and melody; and also encompassing wilder strands of dance music with the bands RIVEN and GLOBAL.
